A Father’s Battle Against Corruption: Seeking Justice for His Children

Edward Hambrick sat at his kitchen table, staring at a pile of papers that had come to represent a years-long battle he was still fighting—a battle not against his child, but against the broken and seemingly corrupt system designed to support that child.

The kitchen was quiet except for the faint rustling of papers and the ticking clock on the wall. His heart was heavy, weighed down by years of frustration, legal jargon, and sleepless nights. He was a father who wanted to do right by his child but was trapped in a system that seemed determined to penalize him.

Edward had always been a proud man, responsible, hardworking, and dedicated. He had never shied away from taking care of his responsibilities. But when Illinois began demanding child support for a debt that wasn’t his to bear, it felt like the ground was being pulled out from under him. They claimed he owed thousands in arrears, but Edward knew the truth: Illinois had no right to collect these funds. Wisconsin—the state where the child had lived—had already terminated the enforcement of the child support case. The mother of his child had even waived her right to the arrears. Yet here he was, being asked to pay for something he never owed.

The Struggle Begins

The first time Edward received a notice from Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, he was confused. He thought it had to be some sort of mistake. How could Illinois claim he owed child support when the mother had received no public assistance from that state? It was Wisconsin that had provided the help she needed. He assumed the issue would be resolved with a simple phone call. But it wasn’t.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Edward soon realized that this wasn’t a mere clerical error—it was a calculated move by officials to recoup money they weren’t even owed. The more he dug, the more he uncovered the layers of misrepresentation, the lack of transparency, and the blatant abuse of power. Illinois officials were asserting a claim on his hard-earned money for public assistance they hadn’t even provided.

Edward spent countless hours reading through legal documents, researching the laws, and drafting letters. He learned about the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA), the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), and the rights and limitations that governed child support across state lines. He knew his rights, but knowing them and getting them acknowledged by a system that seemed built to wear him down were two different things.

Fighting Corruption

Each time Edward sent a letter to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, he felt a flicker of hope. Maybe this time they’d listen. Maybe this time, someone would see that he was just a father trying to stand up for what was right. But the responses he received were cold, dismissive, and often evasive. The letters would cite laws without context, argue points that ignored the facts he had laid bare, and worse yet, continue to demand the money that Illinois wasn’t owed.

Edward began to suspect something deeper. Was Illinois trying to use its authority to unjustly enrich itself? The thought made his blood boil. He wasn’t just fighting a bureaucratic error anymore; he was fighting a system that was designed to take from him what he didn’t owe. He had always believed in fairness, in accountability, but where was that now?

With each legal response, each denial of his request for redetermination, Edward felt the weight of the system pressing down on him. But he didn’t give up. He couldn’t.

The Cost of Injustice

This wasn’t just about money anymore. The stress had taken a toll on Edward’s life. There were days he felt completely drained, emotionally and physically. He remembered nights where the exhaustion would keep him up, staring at the ceiling, wondering how long he could keep this fight going. His family, seeing the toll it was taking, would often encourage him, telling him to keep fighting, that justice would prevail. But there were moments when Edward wasn’t sure anymore.

How could a system that was supposed to support children be so flawed? How could it treat fathers—those who were trying to do the right thing—as if they were criminals?

A Father's Determination

Edward wasn’t alone in this. He knew that. He had seen the faces of other fathers, heard their stories. Fathers who had been wrongfully accused, who had lost everything because they couldn’t fight a system designed to break them down. But Edward wasn’t willing to let that happen to him. He knew his rights, and he knew that his fight was for something larger than just himself. It was about setting the record straight, about standing up against a corrupt system that preyed on those it thought were too weak to resist.

And so, he continued. He gathered more evidence, filed Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, demanding transparency from the very officials who sought to silence him. He asked for a breakdown of every dollar Illinois claimed they had given to the mother of his child. He demanded proof of their legal authority to recoup these funds, knowing full well that such proof didn’t exist.

In his latest letter, Edward had given them a deadline: 14 days to respond. He made it clear that this matter was important, that it could not and would not be ignored. He was done waiting, done being pushed aside by a system that had no regard for fairness. He had worked too hard, sacrificed too much, to let them win now.

The Fight Continues

As he sat at his kitchen table, surrounded by papers, Edward felt a new surge of determination. He had been through so much, but he wasn’t going to give up. He was fighting not just for himself, but for every father who had been wronged by a system that seemed to have forgotten what it was supposed to stand for.

This wasn’t the end of Edward’s journey, but he knew that with each letter, each piece of evidence, he was getting closer to the truth. Closer to the justice he deserved. And though the road ahead was long, he wasn’t walking it alone. His child deserved better, and so did he.

No matter how long it took, Edward was going to see this fight through to the end. Because fathers—just like mothers—deserve fairness. And no amount of corruption could change that truth.

THEY are the creators, instigators, manipulators, antagonizors and criminals of portraying a fair and just system, But in reality is peonage of our struggle to mend the very same pain our ancestors were left to heal.

I can forgive the mother of my children, or even my children in this life without them. For that is all I am left with. But I will NEVER forgive, or ignore the evils that THIS U.S. of A. and crimes its' has committed. I am not here to bash mothers or women. I am here to warn you, and what your children or future children are up against this unseen danger and crimes by their "system" of justice.
